Napa Green – Sustainable Wineries Lead the Way in Calistoga

The wineries in the Calistoga AVA are committed to not only crafting highly sought-after wines, but producing them with a minimal impact on the environment. There are two certification programs for wineries to recognize their eco-driven programs and activities as environmental stewards: Napa Green and Fish Friendly Farming.

Napa Green
Created in the mid-2000’s to encourage and expand sustainable, responsible wineries, Napa Green offers a certification for both vineyards and wineries. The Napa Green Certified Land and Winery programs validate their commitment of caring for Nature, Employees and the Community. The third party audit upholds standards from soil-to-bottle for sustainable grape growing and winemaking.

Napa Green Certified Land recognizes growers whose environmental compliance matches established standards in practices such as erosion control, water conservation and watershed stewardship.

Napa Green Certified Wineries implement more than 100 sustainability standards that encompass the entire operation – from production to administration to hospitality. The criteria include reductions to energy, water and waste and lowering the overall carbon footprint.

Fish Friendly Farming Certification
In vineyard lands adjacent to rivers, wineries and growers work with the California Land Stewardship Institute to ensure their land practices are compliant with the state and federal water quality laws. To receive certification, wineries are measured in water/land conservation areas such as reducing the amount of fine sediment entering creeks, lowering stream water temperatures, and minimizing erosion and soil loss.

The Calistoga AVA boasts 24 wineries that have been certified in one or both of the certification programs. If you would like to learn more about these sustainability effort, visit:
